Preparing a Cheeseboard

Preparing a Cheeseboard

Tip: If you’re using a soft cheese like brie, set it out for an hour before serving it to make sure that it softens so that it will spread.

A well-executed cheese board doesn’t have to be intimidating to put together. Here are some tips on how to build your own cheese platter with just a few key elements.

  • Find a platter that will fit 3-5 types of cheese. This could be anything from a marble or slate platter to a wooden cutting board. When preparing a cheese board, plan on serving three to five cheeses (any more than that will overwhelm the palate).
  • Select a variety of soft and hard cheeses. You should aim for cheeses of distinctly different styles, tastes and textures.
  • Cheddar is a great anchor for any cheese board. It’s populatirty and familiar flavor make it a crowd favorite and it provides a great basis for comparison against other cheeses.

For a simple, but still interesting cheese board, you can try these three selections:

  • A soft cheese such as a triple cream Brie or Camembert
  • A firm cheese like a cheddar or hard Italian cheese
  • A blue vein cheese like Stilton or Roquefort

Choose pairings to go with your cheeses that have complimentary flavors.

  • Triple cream cheeses are creamy and buttery in flavor, so for a nice contrast pair with crisp, fruit and/or nut studded cracker.
  • Sweet and nutty accompaniments such as fruit, almonds, and spices such as ginger help balance the saltiness of blue-veined cheeses.
  • Cheddar is rich and nutty, making it perfectly suited for pairing with foods such as fruits, including cranberries and apples.
  • Hard Italian cheeses pair nicely with nuts, olives, dried fruit and cured sausage or salami.

Place your cheeses on the board in order of softest to hardest. It’s always nice to label each cheese so your guests know what they are eating.

Place your pairings on the board and grab some small knives and plates, so you’re ready to serve.
